Simultaneous Analysis of Nitrite and Ammonium Thiocyanate According to Japanese Testing Methods for Fertilizers (NH2P-50 4E)

Nitrite and ammonium thiocyanate (thiocyanate compounds) are known cause of plant growth disorders. According to Japanese Testing Methods for Fertilizers (2016*), "High-performance liquid chromatography method" under "5.8 Ammonium thiocyanate (thiocyanate compound)" and "5.9 Nitrite" should be carried out with a column filled with polyvinyl alcohol or silica gels modified with amino groups. The method mentions that this analysis is applicable to fertilizers, and Asahipak NH2P-50 4E as a suitable column. In this application, nitrite and ammonium thiocyanate were analyzed using NH2P-50 4E. The calibration curves for nitrite and thiocyanate showed high linearity over the concentration range of 1 to 20 µg/mL.
