Japanese Food Safety Notification (Shoku-An) No.0226-2* (February 26, 2015, Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare (MHLW)) added the “Multi-residue Method II for Agricultural Chemicals by LC-MS (Animal and Fishery Products) to the Shoku-An No.0124001 (January 24, 2005) “Analytical Methods for Residual Compositional Substances of Agricultural Chemicals, Feed Additives and Veterinary Drugs in Food, Chapter II Multiresidue Method”. In the purification step of the test solution preparation method, gel permeation chromatography (GPC cleanup) is employed. The method specifies the use of a GPC clean-up column consisting of a styrene–divinylbenzene copolymer column (12 mm I.D. x 300 mm L, hard-type gel, particle size 16 μm, pore size 30 Å) connected to a guard column of the same material (12 mm I.D. x 100 mm L), or equivalent products. The fractionation range for residual pesticides is from the retention time of acrinathrin to the end of elution of tricyclazole; however, if purification is insufficient, it is recommended to set the fractionation range from the midpoint between the retention times of acrinathrin and flubalinat to the end of elution of tricyclazole. In this application, GPC clean-up column CLNpak EV2000AC-12F and its guard column CLNpak EV-G AC12C were used for the analysis of acrinathrin, tricyclazole, and flubalinat in compliance with the Shoku-An No.0226-2.
