Cation ion-exchange chromatography column, Asahipak ES-502C 7C , was used to separate pochonicine and its analogues. Pochonicine is one type of polyhydroxylated pyrrolizidine alkaloids produced by filamentous fungi, Pochonia suchlasporia var. suchlasporia TAMA 87. The analogues have structures with one of the three hydroxides on the pyrrolizidine ring substituted with hydrogen. Analogue A and B are thought to have the hydrogen substituted on different positions.
