Analysis of Alkyl Sulfonic Acids (2) (SI-35 4D)

Alkyl sulfonic acids were analyzed using IC SI-35 4D, an anion analysis column for suppressor method. It was shown that the longer alkyl chains result with stronger the hydrophobic interaction between the packing material and the sample. With longer alkyl chains, retention time will increase.


Sample : 20 μL
1. Methanesulfonic acid 1 mg/L
2. Ethanesulfonic acid 2 mg/L
3. Propanesulfonic acid 4 mg/L
4. Butanesulfonic acid 4 mg/L
5. Pentanesulfonic acid 10 mg/L
6. Hexanesulfonic acid 20 mg/L
7. Toluenesulfonic acid 20 mg/L


Column       : Shodex IC SI-35 4D (4.0 mm I.D. x 150 mm)
Eluent       : 2.0 mM Na2CO3 + 4.5 mM NaHCO3 aq.
Flow rate    : 0.6 mL/min
Detector     : Suppressed conductivity
Column temp. : 55 °C
