Analysis of Sugars Using Ethanol: A Less Toxic Alternative to Acetonitrile (2) (VG-50 4D)

Acetonitrile is commonly used in HILIC applications; however, it is classified as a hazardous substance. In contrast, ethanol is known to have lower toxicity than many other organic solvents. In this application, sugars were analyzed using commercially available 95% ethanol (JIS K 8102 Ethanol (95)) mixture as a mobile phase. Analysis was performed using a polymer-based HILIC column HILICpak VG-50 4D. Sample solutions were prepared by dissolving sugars in an ethanol/water=1/1 (v/v) mixture, followed by 1+9 dilution with ethanol. To account for the higher viscosity of ethanol, the analysis was carried out at an elevated column temperature and a reduced flow rate.
