The type of preservatives allowed using in cosmetics and their limits are regulated in Japan (law released in 2000): the maximum allowance of phenoxyethanols and the sum of paraoxybenzoate esters (parabens) and their salts are both set as 1 g/ 100 g of cosmetics.
Polymer-based reversed phase column, Asahipak ODP-50 4D, was used for a simultaneous analysis of 2-phenoxyethanol and 6 types of parabens. The result shows a good separation of the seven components.
Sample : 10 μg/mL each, 20 μL
1. 2-Phenoxyethanol
2. Methyl paraben, Methyl p-hydroxybenzoate
3. Ethyl paraben, Ethyl p-hydroxybenzoate
4. Isopropyl paraben, Isopropyl p-hydroxybenzoate
5. Propyl paraben, Propyl p-hydroxybenzoate
6. Isobutyl paraben, Isobutyl p-hydroxybenzoate
7. Butyl paraben, Butyl p-hydroxybenzoate
